Haematology PS

Email from Professor JM at King's:

As requested, I have spoken to Professor H today to ask her opinion regarding your prognosis.
She said that you could expect a normal or near normal lifespan provided you had no complications.
She also added that having the MPL gene mutation would not be expected to result in any different behaviour of your myelofibrosis, compared to other patients with a more common mutation or without a mutation.

What I had actually asked was how long I could expect to be able to continue with normal activities apart from travelling outside the EU, not what my lifespan was likely to be. But perhaps its best to leave this to be clarified at the next haematology appointment, less than three weeks ahead.

Haematology

Blood test this morning:

Platelets                   399
Haemoglobin              10.1
White blood cells          3.74
Neutrophils                   1.58

So the Hydroxycarbamide is successfully reducing thr platelets, but at the expense of lowering the Hb, WBC and Neutrophils. The solution is to reduce the daily Hydroxycarbamide to 5 times a week, leaving out Tuesday and Wednesday. Professor JM also prescribed Flucloxacillin for a poisoned finger.

I asked her if she would get an update of my prognosis from Dr H &b she will do so.
